For some, taking a career test can help you find a profession you never knew you would enjoy. For others, the experience might help answer some personal questions you have about your work/life balance. Personally, I never considered taking a career test at all. Throughout my life, I thought I was one of the lucky few who always knew exactly what she wanted to do with her career.

After I found Jobtest.org, however, I decided on a whim that I should give it a try. By the end of the test, I had discovered new, exciting traits about myself that I never knew. While many of my beliefs were still true, the career test’s unique perspective and results gave me a deeper understanding of my skillset.

Why I Took a Career Test

The decision to take a career test was mostly on a whim; I hoped it would help me build a better work/life balance and explore my personality traits by potentially finding a new career path. As a lifelong student, I’m always looking for new ways to better myself physically, mentally, and emotionally. Although it can be exhausting at times, I genuinely believe that finding the best version of myself can help me as a professional and an individual.

As I worked through the test, I was curious to see what my personality traits were and gain insight into my motivations for pursuing the career I did. I majored in journalism in college, and nothing else had ever appealed to me, so I didn’t expect any surprises when I got my results. I was wrong. After the 15-minute test was over and my results had been calculated, Jobtest.org provided a long list of potential careers I might enjoy. Even more surprising, the list made sense.

My first impressions of Jobtest.org’s career test were that it was easy to navigate, let me work at my own pace, and provided well-written, thoughtful questions. Also, Jobtest.org’s website is user-friendly and easy to navigate, which was a huge plus for me.

Career Personality

One of the things I found most interesting about Jobtest.org’s career test was that, along with career paths, the results offered a list called a “Career Personality.” This feature tells you six personality traits you have as a professional, each representing the strengths you might bring to your career. Here’s my career personality:

Communal: I am able to work effectively in a group and ensure my voice is heard while also supporting other members of the group.
Analytical: I can use analysis and reason to find solutions to a problem.
Pragmatic: I can deal with situations sensibly and realistically, meaning I have a strong hold on my emotions and can remain impartial when making decisions.
Bold: I am able to stand up for myself and others while maintaining professional boundaries.
Orthodox: While this one initially confused me, I did some further research and realized that this means I’m a classic thinker. I look at things in a straightforward way, without any added bells and whistles.
Imaginative: I have a creative streak, and being able to use that is important to my career.

Something that surprised me greatly was the section titled “Career Paths.” This portion of the results gives you five different career paths you may want to explore. For me, those paths were:

Although I haven’t taken any other career tests, the quality of Jobtest.org’s exam was unmistakable. The questions are highly detailed and posed in a clear, concise way. The site’s interface is easy to navigate and gives you as much time as you need so you can thoroughly think through your answers. For me, the only negative was that users needed to pay for their results, which may not be ideal for someone between careers. Even so, I felt the test was well worth the price.

At the end of the day, it’s important to remember that just because a career test gives you options doesn’t mean you have to pursue them. My results included careers in the medical field, but I’m not going to run out and apply to med school. Still, if you answer a test’s questions honestly and to the best of your ability, chances are you’ll get some valuable insights into who you are, who you could be, and maybe just how to get there.
